A Saturday on the manual lathe

Kevin Finan spent part of his Saturday in our shop teaching Clayton Lee, AME’s welder, fabricator and pipefitter, to run our manual lathe. Kevin teaches machining at Atlantic Technical College, and he volunteered his time to share some tricks of the trade with Clayton.

They worked through cutting speed, feed rate, and how to properly indicate and center stock before machining. We came away with the three C’s – carriage, cross slide and compound rest, what each one actually does on the manual lathe.

Christine has known Kevin since 2012, from the MIASF Workforce Education Committee. The thing that’s stood out across all those years is how much he wants to teach this trade and hand it to the people coming up next.

Skilled trades move from one generation to the next because someone takes the time. Thank you, Kevin. Atlantic Technical College is lucky to have you.
