Opening Doors: High School Students Explore Marine Careers at Safe Harbor

Mid March was an eye-opener for 60 Broward County Senior High School Students from Dave Thomas, Flanagan & McArthur High Schools.

AME teamed up with Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, one of our 22 partners at Junior Achievement of South Florida Maritime Storefront, Sea The World , to host a tour that introduced these high school students, who are part of the JA Pre-apprenticeship program, to the exciting world of the maritime industry.

These bright young minds were split into two groups and got a firsthand glimpse into what a career at a shipyard in the yachting industry would look like. The other half of the students received a tour of our 2nd machine shop at LMC and what type of mechanical testing, services & repair we do. They also received a tour of two yachts and the outside that we are performing maintenance on. After a tasty lunch, the split groups switched tours to see what the other group was able to see.

This is just one aspect of the pre-apprenticeship program led by Felix Collazo that begin 3 years ago which this year supports 300+ students who look to join the workforce right after high school in essential industries, that aren’t going to college. Programs like this offer options that are exciting, impactful, and rewarding.

A huge THANK YOU to Lazaro Roig and Georgia Tookey at Safe Harbor Marinas at Lauderdale Marine Center for your time and support to make this happen!

Shoutout to Mike Linder for keeping us all fueled and ready to go with delicious box lunches! Your continuous support with Junior Achievement is amazing! SilverLining S.
