Marine News: Detecting misalignment on a colossal 750 ft Navy Vessel

During a recent trip to Portland, Oregon, we conducted a laser alignment assessment of the port and starboard electric motors to their respective PTOs on a 750 ft Navy Vessel. During our assessment, we did find that some of the alignments were out of coupling tolerances.

Therefore, we recommended that our customer precision laser align the port and starboard electric motors. Following this, we recommended that a vibration analysis of both PTOs should be performed to evaluate operational conditions and establish baseline data for future trend analysis. We recommend quarterly vibration data collection trips to track changes, but if the vessel is less available, a bi-annual collection or, at the very least, annual analysis.
