AME was recently called to determine the cause of abnormal noise on a 253' yacht.

To investigate, AME performed a precision laser alignment assessment of the port and starboard main propulsion units to their respective shafts and a vibration analysis survey of both the propulsion and hull.

We found vibration excited by the propeller caused by a bent shaft on the port side.

We recommended pulling the running gear and sending the port and starboard propellers to a reputable propeller shop to inspect, repair, and set them to ISO Class "S" standard for pitch, balance, and surface finish parameters.

We also recommended collecting precision straightness measurements on the port and starboard main and tail shafts and straighten as needed.

Finally, we suggested doing a post-alignment assessment and a post-vibration analysis to verify the work performed was successful. It also serves as an excellent baseline for future maintenance.

Contact AME for your next alignment assessment or vibration survey!
