The Advantage of Having a Machine Shop Behind the Field Team

In marine and industrial service work, the job rarely goes exactly as planned. A vibration issue may lead to a worn coupling. An alignment job may uncover a soft foot condition, damaged hardware, or a component that needs to be modified. A repair that looked straightforward on paper can quickly turn into a fitting, machining, or fabrication problem once the equipment is opened up.

That is where having a machine shop behind the field service team becomes a serious advantage.

For rotating equipment, diagnostics are only one part of the job. Vibration analysis and alignment evaluations help identify what is happening, but the repair often requires hands-on mechanical support. Shafts, couplings, bases, guards, brackets, mounts, and related components may need to be adjusted, repaired, welded, machined, or fabricated to get the equipment back into proper operating condition.

In the marine world, this support is extremely valuable. Engine rooms and machinery spaces are tight, access is limited, and downtime can become expensive quickly. When a technician finds an issue onboard, the ability to bring that problem back to a capable shop helps keep the repair moving. Instead of waiting on outside vendors or trying to force a part to work, the team can machine, modify, or fabricate what is needed with the actual job conditions in mind.

A recent commercial vessel project is a good example. AME performed an optical alignment evaluation of the shaftlines and a laser alignment evaluation of the rudder bores. To support the shaftline evaluation, the machine shop machined custom Delrin targets to fit the bearing and seal bores, along with an aluminum target for the reduction gear output flange. For the rudder bore evaluation, the team fabricated an aluminum target for the upper bearing bore, a steel plate to mount the laser, and a Delrin target for the lower rudder bearing with a steel flange for the receiver. Each piece had to match the actual bore or mounting surface so the field team could set up the equipment correctly and collect reliable alignment data onboard.

The same applies to land-based industrial work. Pumps, motors, gearboxes, fans, generators, and other rotating machinery often require both diagnostic skill and repair capability. A machine shop gives the service team a practical way to support both planned maintenance and unexpected findings.

On an industrial water treatment project, AME performed the laser alignment of a Fairbanks Morse diesel engine to its gearbox. Before the final alignment could be completed, the engine rails were sent out for precision grinding to restore flatness. Once the rails were reinstalled, the team aligned the engine and poured Chockfast Red to establish the final machinery support. The job reinforced a basic alignment principle: the machinery cannot be positioned correctly until the supporting surfaces are flat, stable, and properly prepared.

When the shop and field team work together, the repair process is tighter. The people diagnosing the problem understand what the equipment is doing, and the people machining or fabricating the solution understand how it needs to perform in service. That connection helps reduce delays, improve fit-up, and support more reliable repairs in the field.
